About the project

Why?

3DKeene is dedicated to informing the community through technology. Using 3D scans, interactive maps, timelines, and real-time traffic data, we document the construction reshaping downtown, letting residents see what's changing, track progress over time, and give people a better idea of what is happening in the community.

The idea

A non-biased record.

3DKeene just documents the construction, no opinions either way. So people can see what downtown looked like as it changed, whether that's someone living here now or someone digging through this in fifty years.

It starts with Central Square and spreads out from there. Every spot gets scanned and photographed, with some notes on what it was. Kind of a time capsule that keeps growing.

The technology, in plain English

How a street becomes a scan.

Step one: photograph everything

Thousands of overlapping photos are taken from every angle. Photogrammetry software finds the details those photos share and works out the true geometry of the scene, down to centimeters.

Step two: make it explorable

The result is turned into a Gaussian splat. The scene redrawn as millions of tiny points of color. It preserves textures a normal 3-D model loses, and it runs in any modern web browser.

Who's behind it

Made in Keene.

3DKeene was founded and is maintained by Quinn Wilson, a Keene-based filmmaker and photogrammetry practitioner, whose ongoing documentation of his own hometown forms the backbone of the archive.
